Stanton made both moving iron and moving magnet cartridges, but most of them, including the moving iron 681, were designed to be plugged into a moving magnet input. Stanton also made a few cartridges designed to plug into a moving coil input, such as the 981 LZS.
I've always found the 681 models to sound excellent, including the last of them, the 681EEE Mk III. That cartridge replaced, for me, the 981 LZS that Stanton had stopped making styli for. I experienced no drop-off in musical enjoyment with the cheaper model--in fact, it sounded better--but the change in cartridge was simultaneous with upgrading from a 1985 LP12 to a new Cirkus model LP12. Even my Linn dealer was impressed with the 681 after he heard it. He's the one who mounted it up for me, making a few good-natured jokes about my cartridge choice until we actually sat down and listened to it.
The problem for me with the 681 is that there are no new factory-original styli being made for them. A Shure M97xE replaced the Stanton in my system, but Shure styli are no longer being made for it, either. My limited experience with 3rd-party replacement styli has not been good, so I prefer to stick with new cartridges that are still being supported by the original manufacturer.
