I like my cartridge to be level with the vinyl surface. This is easy for me to do visually. I shine a flashlight at the front of the cartridge when playing a record and I look at the reflection of the cartridge in the vinyl. I find it very easy to adjust it to be level with the vinyl playing surface.
On the other hand, if your goal is match the internal cartridge generator to the cutting stylus generator, a Fozgometer really works well. However, when I tested a Fozgometer, I found the Fozgometer worked perfectly but all the test records were slightly different. I own a bunch of test records that I've collected over the years and I tested the Fozgometer with eleven different test record tracks and they all gave different results. Because of this, I decided that it's probably just as reasonable to adjust the cartridge to be level with the vinyl playing surface and be done with it. Consequently, that's what I do.
To each his own!
