I'm not familiar with any of these "record players" but it wouldn't take much to be better than the Crosley I saw a few years ago.

In the past, didn't CNN have one or more audio writers who knew something about the subject? This author is really questionable. If they don't know the difference between a preamplifier/preamp and a phono stage, whey would they be writing about turntables?

OK, it was written for beginners as an introduction. But all the more reason to get them started correctly.
