Future of this Hobby

My wife and I attended a family event earlier today and I enjoyed 2 vinyl related exchanges.

I was greeted by the host, who immediately pulled his 13yr old son over to introduce us.

"This is the person I was telling you about- he has a lot of records". Turning to me: "My son asked for a record player for his birthday and has started collecting records". Son "Wow- How many do you have ?" Me- "Several thousand. I started collecting in high school and never stopped. For a long time I was viewed oddly- as if I had a third eye, or was the cousin who had to be hidden away. Now I'm the life of the party. Here let me show you pictures of my collection. Just to reassure you- I also have pictures of my children" Laughter. I proceed to show pictures of my collection to ooos and ahhs. We talk a little bit about LPs and getting started.

Later at the event. I am casually seated as we shared lunch. The conversation turns to records and listening etc. The hostess asks if my listening position/chair is like the old Memorex Poster of the guy in the chair, blown away by his large speakers. We all laugh (I think the poster was funny and still do). I explain that Yes I have a listening chair like that, but my speakers are much smaller.

Another person (married cousin in law- about age 40) asks for details regarding my speakers. I reply- KEF LS50, and Vintage Spendor 15ohm LS3/5A monitors. He asks if I have the new LS50 META ! I was taken aback because I did not expect a knowledgable followup question ! Turns out he is learning about our hobby and has acquired about 75 LPs so far- with ELAC speakers and Project Debut Carbon TT. He and I talked about collecting and LPs for about 30 min.

Together we represented 3 generations of collectors. Our tastes are widely varied but we all share a love of vinyl and LPs.

This bodes well for the future of our hobby !
