Rather than trying to rely on a sonic impression, try a visual one. Take something like a strand of Christmas tree tinsel, or a foam packing peanut and place it on the LP.

When I'm having static issues, said items will stick to the LP surface like glue. Using the Zerostat per alaskahiatt's posted directions, the tinsel will fall to the floor. Note that this is something I only tried once or twice, to prove the Zerostat worked.

I can assume there's a few less pops, but also that my LP isn't drawing in nearly as much dust from the air while it's playing. That means less repeat cleaning, longer stylus and LP life, etc etc.
