Some of the earlier Citation components were excellent, but the 11 and 12 were basically crap. I owned them for a couple of years. They'd reproduce square waves beautifully, but they didn't sound very good with music. I'm surprised you could live with them for 46 years.
I don't know anything about the components you're replacing them with, but based on my experience with the Citation 11 and 12, I'll bet your new components will simply amaze you. All I can say is, "What took you so long to replace those awful Citation components?"
The Citation 12 power amplifier wasn't that bad, but the Citation 11 preamp was awful. I was in the Air Force when I owned them and my Citation 12 power amp got lost in one of my moves. I replaced it with a Hafler DH-200 kit power amp and I had so much fun assembling the Hafler kit that I decided to buy the matching Hafler DH-101 preamp. I'd been using the Citation 11 with the Hafler power amp for a couple of months by the time I finished the Hafler preamp kit. When I replaced the Citation 11 with the Hafler DH-101 preamp, I was flabbergast at the improvement in sound quality. It was like night-and-day! I couldn't get rid of the Citation 11 fast enough.
Happy listening!
