What's the total depth? 3/16 will be fine. 1/4 will look better, but of course it will also be heavier.
Are you using solvent? Probably.
Are you using a table saw to cut? Use a triple chip blade as it will give you the smoothest cut.
Make sure you use a scrapper to removes saw marks from the cut edges.
Use a super flat surface to assemble and solvent the pieces. Of course, solvent the short side first. The pieces have to be at exact 90 degrees to each other for the solvent to flow completely. Capillary action will draw the solvent in.
You can create and solvent handles on the side to assist in lifting the cover.
You can use a touch to quickly run over the cut edges to remove cut marks. They call it flame polishing.
