Mucho years ago, I had a hum that was absent when the tonearm was at rest but would appear when the tonearm was in certain positions over the turntable. The problem turned out to be the insulation on one of the wires was worn so the wire would sometimes touch the tonearm tube. A little silicon glue placed on the worn spot took care of the problem.
