Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

I used Olly's cleaner...

It was pretty good but I would not say its a game changer.

Keep in mind what the different cleaning systems are designed to do.

Ultrasonic: This is the best cleaning system but its not an everyday cleaning system. Ultrasonic cleaning is appropriate for deep cleaning LPs and recovering LPs to a pristine or near pristine condition. It is a restoration system.

With the requirements of the cleaning tank fluid and how it needs to be changed, Ultrasonic cleaning is not practical for everyday cleaning of LPs.

Vacuum Cleaning: Vacuum cleaning machines allow the user to apply and remove a variety of cleaning solutions. The vacuum removal of the fluids leaves a very clean surface but it is not as clean as an Ultrasonic cleaning. Vacuum cleaning is appropriate for everyday cleaning and cleaning just prior to playing.

There a variety of vacuum cleaning machines with the VPI machine a sort of default standard for the industry. The Keith Monks machine with the string cleaning approach is another type of vacuum machine that provides a very good cleaning and it is reported to be quiet compared to the VPI machines.

The Nitty Gritty type of vacuum machine is an inexpensive way to acquire a vacuum cleaning machine. The upward facing vacuum cleaning slot is handy for cleaning of cleaning brushes as well as the intended use of vacuuming cleaning fluid.

There are a number of other machines on the market but for serious LP cleaning a vacuum cleaning machine is required to maintain your LPs and an ultrasonic machine is highly recommended for restoring troublesome LPs.

All LPs, even if they are maintained with a vacuum cleaning machine, will eventually require a deep cleaning that can remove tough clicks and pops. Many vinylphiles assume the clicks and pops are a necessary evil and a part of vinyl playback. This is not true.

A good ultrasonic cleaning can usually restore a noisy LP back to a quiet background free of most of the clicks and pops that many assumed were part of the hobby. The deep dirt that is present in many LPs can be removed by a good ultrasonic cleaning. It can restore noisy LPs to a quieter state and in many cases can restore them to a pristine state.

There are many vacuum and ultrasonic machines on the market. When you shop for a vacuum machine you should inquire whether the machine turns your dirty LP for you, whether it can turn it in both directions, and how easy it is to change the pick up.

The pickup on a vacuum machine is the most important item in its design. If it is easy to change, remove and clean, then you have a machine that can be maintained and kept in good working order. You have to remember that the vacuum pickup is the most important thing in the vacuum machine design.

The pickup can get contaminated and dirt on the pickup can spread dirt to subsequent LPs. You have to maintain the vacuum machine's pickup and ensure it is very clean. The idea is to clean LPs, not to spread dirt around.

When looking at ultrasonic machines you should consider the size of the water bath, how often the fluid must be changed, how the fluid gets changed, how the machine rotates the LP in the fluid bath, how many LPs/records can be cleaned in a single cycle and what kind of cleaning regimen is recommended by the maker of the ultrasonic machine.

Ultrasonic machines can be found starting below $1000 USD and available for much more than $1000. The cost is usually associated with many of the things I mentioned above. Be careful when choosing an ultrasonic machine. Ask about all of the things listed above and then listen to the sales pitch.

Buying an ultrasonic cleaning machine is a very good idea but you can spend a lot of money on a machine that could sit dormant most of the time. Remember, an ultrasonic machine is a restoration device and you will not be using it on a daily basis like a vacuum machine.

Shop carefully and ask people who may have experience with the particular machine before you spend any money on the device.

Good Luck,
Ed
