Peculiar indeed. Have you moved the tonearm while watching the internal workings to make sure nothing is physically interfering? Some disassembly may be required first. It sounds like something in the return/start feature may be the problem. Depending on where your paitent level is with these things (mine is pretty low) you may have to go with the manual table. I have done this with several older units over the years and they still play records just fine. Good Luck!
