You're as bad as me! I have two microscopes in Alaska and three microscopes at my Washington State location. I never paid more than $40 for a scope, until I purchased the Shure SEK-2. Recently on eBay, I have seen two Shure scopes go for under $100!

On my homemade lighting system in my post, I had to put a cover over the lights, in order to see the wear patterns. Without the covers, the lighting was too bright. The lights were LEDs, so the covers did not overheat.

I used to enjoy FredJ's posts years ago about proper lighting and magnification, and that's what got me started. We have so many alumni from this asylum that have moved on for one reason or another.
