Not so much. Starting with a clean record is important. Defects of very short duration, such as clicks and pops, can almost always be surgically removed or repaired using simple audio editing software such as Audacity or Reaper. Removing hiss and hum usually involves some kind of software filter which often does more harm than good. Either way, the computer mouse gets a good workout!

As you mentioned, some folks just don't "cotton to" digital, so even the best, cleanest, most error free digital recording, either an original studio production or a copy of an LP, will never be satisfactory.
