There's definitely something wrong if you prefer the Sony. You don't mention the nail attached, could be a bad case of lack of synergy.I have as one of my many tables a KD500/Grace G707 combo that just didn't work with two carts that should have been the cart de rigueur at the time. Initially I was enjoying my wood body Grado on the table, sounded awesome until the maidinator took it out with her mighty dust rag.
This led me to installing my favorite cart used on my Thorens, a NOS Pickering XV15 1200E/D1200, something wasn't right. I tried my XV15 625E, same issue with sibilance on the same albums. This didn't make sense as the Pickerings should have been a great match on paper, and I would have thought one most likely sold with the deck back in the day.
So unless I replaced my Grado my search was on for the perfect cart. I tried my Grado Green/8MZ V, sounded fine but not in the same ballpark as the Platinum. Was about to pull the trigger on another wood body when I came across a NOS Grace-F8L'10. About the same price as the Platinum so I was caught in a conundrum. I decided on the Grace, and what a fortuitous decision that was, the Grace/Grace combo was the shit, I no longer lament the loss of the Platinum as it led me to vinyl nirvana.
I've always been a big believer in synergy between components, but had never been slapped in the face so hard by it lol.
