CD playback seemimgly has gotten better through the years. Not to put too fine a point on it but the discussion shifts when you consider the design of DAC's (which have undergone a zillion changes) and look separately at disc-players as transports.I am breaking in a new Blue-Ray player as CD/SACD transport right now. The sound is (a bit disturbingly) crystal clear. There's no sweetening, certainly. The music rolls out with minimal digital artifacts that I can discern. ("Artifacts" are hard to characterize but are the things that made early CD players so awful to my ears-- a creepy metallic overtaste added to the music.)
It's a very different performance than LP's but it stands up well on its own.
As time passes, I'm thinning my record collection to around 2000 LP's as my digital recording collection has grown to around the same. As a music lover I encounter the occasional CD and try to make the best of it!
