RE: a newbie in need of help - entry TT advice

I've owned the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC for almost 2 years. At the time I was mulling either this or a Rega P3 or a Music Hall. The Pro-Ject happened to come up on Massdrop so I pulled the trigger. For the money it's a decent value right out of the box, and there are a couple of improvements you can make later on as time/budget allows.

If you get any 60 Hz hum, swap in a better RCA/ground cable between the TT and your preamp. The cable it ships with is rubbish. It may not be an issue in every system, but multiple people have reported this.

The Ortofon 2M Red cart it comes with is not bad, though it has a bit of a compressed sound and is prone to inner groove distortion (alignment protractor showed the installation was spot-on from the factory). I upgraded to an AT-440MLb about a year ago and thus far have not felt a burning desire (only a mild itch) to upgrade again. The 2M Blue and Bronze are also popular. Just keep in mind that the carbon fiber tonearm has a relatively low effective mass (6g if memory serves) that limits how well it pairs with lower compliance cartridges. The tools and databases at vinylengine.com are useful in helping to figure this out.

The counterweight has some graduations that will get you in the ballpark on tracking force, but they're not incredibly accurate. The $10 digital stylus force gauges on ebay work great.

Also keep in mind that the DC version is not compatible with the external Speed Boxes, so if you play 45s you're going to have to lift off the platter and physically move the belt.

Lest any of the above be construed as a serious complaint...
Two years ago I owned perhaps a dozen records that I'd occasionally play at a friend's house. Today I have slightly more than 500 and I need to build another rack to expand my storage capacity. For me, the Pro-Ject table has been a good budget gateway to vinyl.
