Not all contemporary digital recordings sound bad, same as not all LPs from the pre-digital days sound good.
But on average, in my experience, we get better quality via LPs than we get via digital format.
Sometimes we get a tight match -- some well sounding LPs need to do a lot of run for their money in order to better their digital counterparts. I was listening to the original Weather Report "Tale Spinnin'" LP side-by-side with the remastered CD. Close match, although the LP wins in the end. Where the digital fails is in the finer details. LP gives a much more filigree feel to the music -- more delicate, intimate, but also with somewhat deeper, firmer, warmer bass.
Still, an amazingly good job on the digital remaster, I must admit.
