RE: Distortion Problem with New Cartridge

Distortion of trumpet makes me think the cartridge is mistracking. Muted trumpet recorded at a high level in general will be a good test of a cartridge's tracking ability. Higher VTF can help reduce mistracking

Phono overload might cause your problem too, but higher vtf wouldn't help in that case.

In my system, things like Joe Cocker's voice crackling, sibilance from Louis Armstrong's voice and distortion from his muted horn have been dreaded indications of mistracking.

Mistracking could also be a sign of needle damage. Sound-smith will inspect a cartridge for $75, I believe.

Even with a perfect needle and perfect setup, some cartridges track better than others. I am not familiar enough with yours to know what it's capable of. In my system, I have usually eliminated mistracking by replacing the cartridge with a better tracker.
