Du Pre - Elgar Cello Concerto

The story of Jacqueline du Pre is stranger than fiction and has a Shakespearean tragic dimension. Knowing the outcome, I can hardly look at footage or interviews featuring Daniel Barenboim without thinking: "there's the man who left his sick wife in pursuit of his own career".

When du Pre played, she seemed to become one with the cello and could produce the most beautiful sound: a personal, introspective and organic sound that seems so quintessentially feminine, and yet so different to the the way the famous male cellists attack the instrument.

Click on the link below for the second best version of this concerto - also du Pre, accompanied by her husband Barenboim, recorded in 1970 just before her decline and a few year before her retirement from performance at the young age of 28.

Du Pre died of MS during the "Great Storm of 1987" a storm which wreaked havoc across the UK so that - like Mozart - her death was almost unreported and she too slipped away quietly to the hereafter.

Despite what fate unfairly handed down, Jacqueline du Pre's recording of the Elgar Cello concerto with John Barbirolli and the LSO on EMI is unmatched, and will remain so forever.

ASD655 Elgar Cello Concerto; Jacqueline du Pre, accompanied by the LSO conducted by John Barbirolli.

Recorded at Kingsway Hall, London 19th August 1965
