RE: Expensive Electronics Cheap Turntable

Hard to judge what something sounds like without hearing it? A well setup but inexpensive TT setup might sound pretty decent? Been home sick this week and got bored so I grabbed some old stuff from the basement to see how it sounded compared to my regular setup.

A Dual 505 ($75) with a minty Empire 888P with original Empire stylus ($50) hooked up to an old Roksan phono stage did a pretty decent job. It did not sound as good as my regular setup but fun in its own way. It was dynamic, big sounding, tonally spot on with big fat bass. A lot of this might be due to the cartridge (the original stylus are hard to find) which a sleeper IMHO. In this case, I don't think the ultra low mass Dual arm was a great match with this cart which needs a bit more arm.

I find it difficult to stomach when I see expensive electronics and a very small number of LPs. I mean, what do they do, just listen to the same LPs over and over again? Yuch!
