I've recently added a 3rd party outer ring clamp to my VPI turntable. One of the known problems with rings (including the VPI ring I am told) is that a small mistake in putting down the stylus on a record could quickly result in a ruined stylus and an expensive repair. My solution was to place a small O-ring on the VPI arm lift. The size ring that works for my (original 12") VPI arm was 1/8" thick and 1/8" inner diameter. It needs to be tight.
If I place the arm just to the left of the O-ring and leaning against it, the stylus falls exactly to the right place. It takes quite a bit of trial and error to get the ring into exactly the right position, but placing the stylus on a record becomes easy and fast. Even if I were to stop using the ring weight (and I do not think that's going to happen) I would keep this in place for its convenience.
