RE: Record Grading

Well I go to two different vinyl shops here. One has been in business for many years and the other one for two or three. The newer one has expanded into a larger store, the store is nice and the records well presented. The older store is in the same basement premises as when it started, the records are in what are pretty well makeshift tables with quite a few in milk crates on the floor.

I bought quite a few new LPs from the older store over the years, but never used ones as nothing looked appealing.

The newer store has neatly printed labels on every album with the title, price and grading. This made me feel more confident and I bought a few used albums there. The last one, the one I complained about in my previous post, had a very clean jacket and my visual inspection could not detect any scuffs or scratches on either side.

So I am intrigued as to how stores go about grading used vinyl. BTW I am also intrigued by a practice I see where lighter fluid is used to clean the surfaces.

I think I will go back to my former policy of only buying new vinyl, but in that case my purchases will be few since I am now retired and money is not what it used to be and the prices are very high.

So instead of writing an editorial it would be simpler and more productive to simply provide a practical answer instead of a religiously inspired one. The religion being vinylism.

Regards.
