I had worked quite a bit with JaS when I moved the Cartridge Database over to the VE. My exchanges with him included nothing to draw the conclusion that you have.
He is a dedicated moderator of the VE and, unless something has changed, does this on a part time basis. I have no idea how he finds the time to run the VE, do his regular job and take care of his family.
IIRC he has two young girls and that is a full time job in and of itself.
It seems to me that he has been less tolerant of anything that would appear out of bounds of their rules but please understand he is doing what he is doing and has no time to support special cases.
He has been constantly dealing with every nuisance known to web site administrators and as a result some things have been tightened up over at the VE. The personal messages section of the VE has been pretty much eliminated due to abuse of grown up children without any sense of decency.
I would be much less tolerant in his position and I suspect most of us would be the same.
