Collapsing cartridge suspension

A customer called and said the suspension on his two or three year old cartridge appears to be failing, as he has experienced significant distortion on some records, including those with warps. It sounds as though the body is coming close to or maybe even touching the record sometimes.

I've omitted the brand and model of the cartridge in order that it not influence what you might say. But I would like to know people's experiences with various cartridges, including brands that are more prone to such failures, and especially why suspensions might fail. For what it's worth, this is his third cartridge by the same manufacturer that has had suspension collapse. He does listen almost entirely to vinyl and gets a lot of use out of his cartridge, but this sort of thing seems odd, especially given that he is extremely careful with everything and has the tracking force within the manufacturer's recommended range. He keeps his records and stylus clean, and his home is well controlled environmentally, so no issues there.
