My good friend Mike (fellow record collector/crate-digger) called recently, asking me to accompany him on a mission to help a friend out. The friend, Lee, lives up on the Montana/Wyoming state line, on the southwestern flanks of the Pryor Range.

We arrived at Lee's place and addressed the first problem, a crapped out stereo. Lee is a longtime collector, having frequented countless auctions and yard sales over the years. We dug through shelves loaded with stereo gear, selecting a very nice Marantz receiver and a better quality vintage turntable. After cleaning/lubricating the control pots in the Marantz, we put it all together and got Lee back in business, spinning records.

Lee then showed us about 50 large apple crates in two rooms, all loaded with records. He explained that the 5,000+ records were culls that he didn't want. They were destined for the thrift shops in Billings but Lee invited Mike and I to dig through and take whatever we wanted, gratis.

There was a large workbench available, and for about 4 hours Mike and I dug through the boxes. We'd each look through a fresh box, pull some gems and then switch, with the other guy going through it. So we each had an equal amount of 'first look' and 'sloppy seconds.'

We both pulled a lot of great stuff. Mike's focus is strictly '60s/'70s Rock, while my taste is more eclectic.

We finished with about 80% of the records and Lee then took us in the second room. He picked up a stack of about fifty LPs and announced: "Here's the good stuff fellows", while flipping through a bunch of very clean early Stones mono LPs, Beatles, and other '60s Rock goodies. With Mike arranging the whole dig, I suggested he take first look through this choice lot while I grabbed another box. Mike was finding some real gems. About four records into the box I was on, I about sh*t my pants, pulling out a third state (peeled) Beatles "Butcher Cover!" That was the most notable find of the day, although we both found a lot of great records. Not shown, but Mike took home about 150 LPs, tons of Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, a big run of early Zappa/Mothers, etc...

It was a helluva lot of fun, one of the best digs I've participated in.

Can't believe I found a Near Mint 1910 Fruitgum Co. LP. The Azevedo LP is Christian Pop, not too exciting, this one will get passed on.

The Bobby Bare LP is very good. Forty years of digging and I finally find a "Butcher Cover." Adam Bomb is a decent Metal LP. The Alan Bown is a very good Pop/Psych LP.

"Brass Monkey" is a very good Rock LP. Alicia Bridges, turned out to have a nasty little edge warp. No big loss, looks like Disco LP. Nice cover photo, but the Peter Brown LP sucks, tiresome Disco.

Cache Valley Drifters is excellent Bluegrass. The Cash record is a 4 LP repackage/box, all NM vinyl. The Carlos record is a Brazilian import. Great record, although I can't understand a single word he's singing.

It's not often I find Coltrane records, nice to grab these. "Conglomeration" is a high school band. Actually very good, definitely a keeper.

Not so keen on "Cutting Crew" after listening, probably gonna pass it on. The Deep Purple of course is excellent, a German pressing.

The Sally Eaton LP is a somewhat rare Psych/Folk record on the Paramount label. Nice to find my favorite Esquivel LP in Near Mint condition, a welcome upgrade.

A Near Mint copy of "Frijid Pink"... never thought I'd find one in this condition.

Olive-green label Dead LPs and a German import Hendrix.

This Wanda Jackson is about as close to "Mint" as I've ever seen, nearly impossible given the black cover.

Yes, I do actively seek out the strange and unusual!

I gave this Jerry Lee Lewis LP a spin... it's a rocker!

From Hawaiian Christmas LPs to Japanese Metal bands, a wide range of great music.

My buddy Mike finds gem!!! Must've found about eight copies of this LP.

Super clean Loretta Lynn and Rose Maddox LPs will be upgrades to my existing copies. These Mayall LPs are both compilations, one of live material.

I already have "Ummagumma", but another copy for free, why not? Looking forward to spinning this Jaco Pastorius LP.

I never expected to see a British Invasion act on the Audio Fidelity label. I suspect this Tito Puente LP is gonna be 'Killer.'

Dutch and U.K. imports. "The Smile" is a private label, looks like Rock, I'll have to spin to find out if it's 'junk' or 'gem.'

I'm always looking for early Xian Rock. I don't think this Randy Stonehill LP is particularly rare, still a nice find. God only knows about this 'Christmas' LP.... looks like it's gonna be one helluva weird one.

The cleanest "Plays Telstar" I've ever found. The Porter Wagoner (and about six other LPs) were still-sealed copies. Happy to find this Tom Waits LP, filling a gap in my collection.

Just about every genre of music imaginable in this dig. That Komlossy LP is a Hungarian import.

There were a lot of Christian LPs to dig through. I looked for the weird spoken word stuff, and anything that looked like Christian Rock.

In addition to these Jazz 78 rpm album sets, I also pulled about 70 single ten inch records and a nice Sinatra twelve incher. Some really choice stuff, Hot Jazz & Big Band from the '20s/'30s, some R&B and Doo Wop from the late '50s, etc....

A shame about the mold damage on the beautiful Jim Flora "Bix and Tram" album cover, but the 78s are in pristine condition. Some killer Hot Jazz from the late '20s.

Mike left, and Dave (yours truly) right, in front of a huge pile of records we spent four hours digging through.

Here's the LPs from the dig. Also kept about two dozen nice seven inch 45s from the '50s & '60s.
