It's an ongoing process. I record with a Korg MR2000S digital recorder at 1 bit/5.66 MHz. At that resolution, the internal hard drive of the recorder can hold about 20 albums.Then, they're all copied to my laptop and converted to FLAC 24/96. After that, it's into VinylStudio for cover art, track information and click removal.
I find that by seperating the recording from the music playing, that it's a lot less bothersome. All I have to do is turn on the recorder when playing a record, and remember to hit pause when flipping the LP over.
Some might not think it's worth doing, and that's fine. But, my mother now has a portable USB drive with all of my father's old Jazz LP's from the 40's and 50's that have never sounded better.
With the cleanup tools available with some software packages, you can easily remove crackle and pop from vinyl, or hiss and rumble from tapes. The transcribed version of the music can sound better than the original, as the noise floor can be much lower.
Maybe it's not for everyone. My motivation was to eventually have everything on a music server, and you have to start somewhere.
The term "transcribe" seems to be the most popular for doing this, as opposed to archive or rip.
