So I would assume that the problem comes from there. I have a reasonably priced set up too, less than $1000, and I've never experienced any distortion whatsoever on my jazz vinyl. The problem when starting an LP collection is the amount of crap lying around, feels like 90%.
Do yourself a favor, buy a great Music Matters reissue for example, or a Mofi, or any high quality jazz reissue and see if you have distortion. Then you'll know it's your set-up.
Unless your turntable is structurally flawed you shouldn't experience this type of problem.
