We discovered this by accident. We had a door mat made of, what we used to call "astro turf". the cat would scratch all manner of hell out of that door mat but never scratched anything else. Therefore we bought another mat made of the same material and had one at each door. He never scratched anything else in the house. We had him for 19 1/2 yrs.
Our cat had a mischievous character. Kinda like, "I'm going to do this and see if I can get away with it." My character is also mischievous. So I bought a squirt gun. Water doesn't hurt the cat and doesn't hurt much in the house. But it is a reminder to the cat. When he did things I didn't like or went places he shouldn't be, I shot him with the water gun. Now please be advised that there are certain places which you don't want to shoot the cat because he will jump, not so daintily or with finesse which may be the ruination of whatever he happens to be upon. IOW's, on the TT is not a good place to shoot the cat with a squirt gun.
Anyway, our cat got to the point that all I had to do was show him the squirt gun or bottle and he backed off.
There are certain things you should know also. Cats love high places and looking out windows. Don't put your TT in front of a window. No amount of squirting will change his behavior in that area. It is a built in instinct. AAMOF, you may be able to keep him off other things if you put something in front of his favorite window on which he can sit or lay and look out the window.
