Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

I own and use a Denon D-62L...

And have replaced a sandwich of two mats with a Herbies Way Excellent II mat.

I was using a sandwich of an Audioquest Sorbogel mat with the orginal Denon mat on top. The Sorbogel mat has the problem of sucking the life out of anything it was placed on. That is the nature of sorbothane...duh.

I wanted the highly effective damping properties that the Sorbogel mat had but I wanted a better sound than that mat alone could bring. I ended up putting the Sorbogel mat on the platter with the original Denon mat on top of the Sorbogel mat. That did the trick for about 5 years.

Unfortunately there was a problem that took 5 years to surface. The Sorbogel mat slowly leached the plasticizers out of the Denon mat. The result was a dryed out outer edge on the Denon mat that caused the Denon mat to "bubble" up when nothing was on the table.

When you stopped and observed this thing in action you would swear that the table was haunted. I use a record clamp so when a LP is being played all is well. When I removed the LP and carefully watched the table under the proper lighting a portion of the Denon mat would start to raise when the LP was removed.

The effect was slow and down right possessed. It was entertaining but only caused by the drying out edge of the Denon mat caused by the Audioquest Sorbogel mat. It was an interesting problem to troubleshoot.

I replaced all of this stuff with a Herbies Way Excellent II mat and am very happy with that purchase. The Herbies mat sufficiently damps the DP-62L's platter and sounds livelier that the original Denon mat.

The Denon mat is a bit darker sounding that the Herbie's mat and the increased detail is immediately apparent. At first I didn't know whether I liked the change but after using the mat for about a week it was something I was happy that I did.

The Herbie's mat is a very good product that is worth the money being asked.
