In Reply to: Would you rather have: 20,000 Lps with a lot of average stuff, and only 2,000 great ones, or just the 2,000 ? posted by Elizabeth on March 24, 2012 at 20:47:07:
On my last birthday I passed from being an old fart to a ROF (really old fart). That experience can make you think about what you want from the rest of your life.I had already decided to reduce my record collection due to a future move. Now with the pages seemingly flying off the calendar more quickly I need to get on with it.
My collection is only about 3,000 LPs, no where near Elizabeth's proposal of 20,000. Still, I ask myself, how many of these do I want to listen to again? And more appropriate to her question, would I rather listen to fewer favorites many times more or work my way through all of them only once or twice? So I set a target of 1,500 keepers. That was defined by the capacity of 15 Rack-it cubes I bought from a friend a few years ago. How's that for being scientific?
Culling has been a slow and in some cases difficult process, but I hope to finish up this spring. Then sales of the more valuable stuff and donations for the rest.
Anyway, it is fun to read other's reactions to her question.
