Vertical friction vs horizontal friction damping

I have found that friction and damping in the horizontal direction has a bigger impact on the sound of a tonearm than the friction in the vertical direction. Moreover, the horizontal pivot is harder to implement well because of the need to allow the tonearm to swing through a larger angle in the horizontal direction than in the vertical direction and because of the need to find a route to feed the tonearm wires from the arm tube through to the base.
