I want to jump in here with a metaphor. I put people to sleep (and wake them up, usually) all day, 5 days a week. One thing I've learned is there are very few absolutes. Many, many ways exist to accomplish a complex anesthetic or even a simple one. There is rarely only one technique that works. Every day, I run across a new way to "skin the cat" so to speak. Especially now with current drug shortages, work arounds and alternative approaches abound.
Why do we look down on the folks at VPI for providing a multitude of options for those who are looking for something different. Maybe you like rim drives and I believe belts are the way to go. Shouldn't we applaud Harry and Mike for building tables that make great music BOTH ways? The VPI tonearms first were unipiviots and now he has figured out a gimbled tonearm that he believes works. What is wrond with that? Clearaudio has a number of differing types of arms IIRC. Let us count the ways. Magnetic pivots, linear trackers, non-magnetic pivoted and more are produced without criticism. VPI's heavy platters had a lead center to them, it became difficult or prohibited to produce them so alternatives were developed and more than one were sonically acceptable. Why criticize the manufacturer for providing CHOICE in a society that holds choice of primary importance?
Full disclosure here, I have 2 different VPIs as well as a HW-16.5 vac. I don't for a minute believe VPI has the final word on LP playback but they have successfully produced fine sounding players using different technologies. I think a lot of criticism is leveled at VPI because Harry is accessible. Criticize the sound or the price IIHO, but finding fault in the multitude of choices seem trite.
