I have a fine dissection stereo scope and it is great for LOOKING at the cartridge and stylus for any gross problems, however, it cannot tell if there are flats developing easily. I have also a stereo medical microscope that can really magnify, I use it at around 200x and can see the flats with careful use, the flats really jump out on a worn stylus, less so for a stylus that is not quite as worn, so even at 200x you have to know what you are looking for...
