Lowdown on the Solid One and phonophono

Phonophono do indeed have a site:

PhonoPhono

The main guy there is called Peter Luetzelberger and he is very helpful, speaks English, and is used to exporting to other countries. However he is quicker to respond on the phone than to emails.

At the time of my original order, all prices were in Deutschmarks (now they're in Euros), as follows:

DM 4888 turntable with one tonearmbase and armboard and record weight
DM 520 each extra armbase
DM 600 microcontroller (speed control unit, works on US voltage too)
DM 735 shipping
DM 6743 TOTAL

At today's exchange rate (which is even better than in the fall), this would work out to just over US $3000. You would also need a second armboard (they will drill any armboard for you) for the second tonearm: I only know the price in Euros for this, about €70 (let's see if that Euro symbol comes out!), which is $61 at today's exchange rates.

The shipping is expensive because this sucker is HEAVY -- about 100 pounds with two armbases (the platter alone weighs 45 pounds), but you get the advantage of the great exchange rate and not having to pay Germany's VAT. And if you make sure that they label the package "record player", it will be duty-free through US customs (believe it or not!).

The turntable is non-suspended and requires SERIOUS attention to what you put it on. I currently have it on Geoff Kaits' Promethean Base.

J!
