Sound of CD player with different isolation mechanisms.

Initially I just put some weight on top of my player. The sound improved significantly. Then I put some a pillow of bubble wrap below the player. The bass was just fantastic. But still I thought the sound seemed congested or had too much 'hash' in the highs. Then I replaced the bubble wrap under the player with a bicycle inner tube. Now the bass is not that great but it is tight and the highs seem very extended. For example, I could feel the vibration of the drum kit instead of just the whole beat. My player is the Philips 963SA. Has anybody experienced this much variation in sound with different isolation mechanism affecting different parts of the frequency spectrum ?? It is weird and I am freaked out about this now !!!
