Before you (more or less irreversibly) paint your not-cheap speakers, try out the famed "98 cent Lowther tweak" (see link). It is completely reversible, and many folks swear by it for whizzered drivers.Regarding dammar, here are a couple links:

Thorsten recommends more coats on the whizzer, fewer on the main cone.I bought some dammar last night at an art supply, and it came pre-dissolved in turpentine. For a small project (i.e. speaker drivers) this is probably best.
If you try the 98 cent tweak and still want to dammar your cones, I would suggest doing it in stages, first on one driver then the other, so you can always A-B the results and stop before you apply too much.
