Thank you, Mark; a very much more considered and reasonable rebuttal.

My own data is partially anecdotal, and not rigorous, but I feel indicative of extreme caution.

Although my own sensitivities were not developed by direct exposure to trichloroethane (aldehydes, epoxies, and complex dedicated toxins manufactured by tropical hardwoods were my direct downfall), it is one of the handful of substances I cannot tolerate even slight exposure to. Exceeding even epoxies (and rivalling formaldehyde), a sniff of this stuff will have me sick and developing skin lesions for a week.

My exposition of the activity of these weird quasi-organics in the post below was given me by my good friend Dr. Robert Kinzie, a biologist by trade. He stands aghast at the casual treatment given these compounds (including referigerants and the strange solvents used so much for catalyzed polyurethane auto, cabinet, and stone finishes); feeling that their buildup in the lymph and other toxin-removal systems of the body is a probable contributor to Hodgkins and other cancers. Once these compounds get into your body, you just can't get them back out; there's no provision for them.

Many of my friends in the aviation years worked day jobs in auto repair shops, where this stuff became much used due to fire insurance advantages; and I know of several who became sensitized to it to the extent that they had to find other work or cheat on the tank, going back on the sly to kero. I haven't talked to these guys in years; I fear for their medical future.

As I said, largely anecdotal, and maybe my original reply was a little shrill; but Julien asked for opinions, and mine is a strong one. There are so many good solvents and cleaners among the alcohols, ketones, petro's; why subject ourselves to these weirdo molecules, hoping that they won't kill us?   Fifty years a craftsman, I'm a poster boy for this sh!t; you don't want to be like me, I promise.

Regards,

Poinz
