Understand your points, although I have little exposure to the 8542, and next to none on the 15w or 13M from Scan Speak.Presently I have four setups in my listing area, but mostly only two in rotation. One with the 8545k and another with the smaller Focal 5V. Still enjoy the 8545k for many of the reasons you mentioned, but the 5" does have some advantages in midrange and oddly upper bass articulation.
But since these are all two ways, my experiences don't really apply to your creations. If I were to build a setup of the size/design of yours, I too would not be looking to an 18 cm for midrange.
