Fast/clean bridge rectifier explanation (for Corda Headamp)

Hi folks,

I've been reading the archives for several hours trying to figure out what exactly to do to upgrade the shoddy DI106 DIP rectifier in my Corda Headamp. I've gotten completely confused as to what the problems are and what the solutions are, and where to use what.

I've picked up the following details, but some of it contradicts or is ambiguous:

- Schottkys are damn fast (good), but they can ring (bad)
- Conventional silicon diodes have switch-off spikes
- Schottkys do not spike like this
- You can use a snubber network to fix this problem
- You can use a different kind of snubber on each(???) schottky to fix the ringing problem.
- FREDS/HEXFREDs are high-power alternatives to schottkys. They are soft-recovery and do not spike like conventional diodes.
- conventional diodes with snubber are quieter than (HEX)FREDs

I think some people must have been posting incorrect or ambiguous info because there are a lot of contradictions in the archives. So now I'm completely confused because, for example, I have no idea what people mean by the snubber in different situations. Where do schottkys stand in all this? At digikey, there are schottky HEXFREDs. Are these the only type of HEXFREDs, or is there a Si version? Does the switching speed really matter, or is what's most important just a matter of quelling the spikes?

Hopelessly confused. Please advise!

PS - for those of you who have Cordas, I have been playing with upgrades to this amp and replaced the LM6171's with OPA627's in the gain stage and a BUF634 buffer in the output stage - it sounds heavenly!
