I have replaced the original pot on my integrated amp with an
upgraded pot and realized a dramatic improvement, I guess it sort of depends what was in there originally. Later I replaced the pot with a home-brewed stepped attenuator, which is even better, and can be built for < $40 (isn't that what an Alps goes for). If your interested in building your own, there is a website which will help you determined the appropriate resistor values. Much easier than doing the calculations by hand.
