The DACT attenuator makes beautiful highs as it passes on a big part of the harmonic envelope of the treble part of notes that most commercial pots as well as discrete resistor attenuators kill or glaze over. The same transparency makes the DACT very revealing of the shortcomings of the electronics and speakers (and yes, even cables, power cords and power line conditioners) that are a part of its system. Let me guess. You're friend got ss stuff right? :)
