Re: John Curl: Have you played with the Tripath?

I too have evaluated the TriPath evaluation modules, as well as a complete amplifier from them.

I have been following the TriPath technology since the beginning. The amp circuitry they have been making available to the audio industry has been significantly revised at least 4 times, with three different eval boards that I know of. There may have been even more.

The first couple of versions did not sound very good, and measured pretty poorly. A combination of subjective and objective criteria said that the amp had a ways to go. To TriPath's credit, they did respond by making changes and upgrades, improving both the subjective and objective results each time. The last version I heard had come a long way. Was it audio nirvana? Not yet. Was it quite decent sounding on a standalone basis? Yes.

Is the eval board the same as the Bel Canto Evo circuit? Not likely.
It is very likely that Bel Canto came up with their own solution to some of the remaining issues. One thing I noticed, was that the Bel Canto PS was quite substantial, and have a lot of EMI filtering, a must with this type of circuit.

I think it appropriate to comment and make known our personal opinions, and it does help to keep in mind that some of us base those opinions on more than a good feeling, but years of experience, and sophisticated measurement techniques too.
