You could certainly experiment with various ferrites, but you probably will not find the special composition ones used for these. Ferrites have a large range of characteristics. The ones used for transformers for instance are entirely different than those used for RF blocking.The main advantage of the binding post is to provide an add-on for those that don't have the skills to re-solder or crimp their existing cables. Also, even if you intend to put the ferrites directly on your wires, you will still need to tune-up first to determine the optimum strength. The binding post makes this pretty convenient.
