For the same reason they didn't do much to improve the sound of LPs; a big percentage of the people didn't know, and didn't care.
It's no different today, where the majority of young people are content to listen to music by using their phones and a pair of cheap ear buds.
Even a big percentage of the neo-vinyl users claim its "warmer", but how much warmth are they getting out of their cheap Crosly record players? It's being trendy for most of them, nothing more.
