you say you hear differences in caps & tubes just to mention a few parts, so why not cables? I've built hundreds of them and the materials make a difference.
Your statement reminds me of a fellow I know who said the same thing. I invited him over for a listen & after a few songs, changed all my PC's out for stock pieces. The soundstage shrunk considerably and the bass dropped off. Played a few songs with those then swapped them back out and the soundstage & bass returned. He then said if he hadn't heard what just happened he would never have believed it could make a difference.
You can try a simple experiment by polishing the prongs to see if that makes any difference. This is an $8 Wattgate that's close to 20 years old. I polished it with a Dremel & simichrome.
