py272 - You just push them in which isn't the easiest thing. I sometimes used pliers for those locations that I couldn't quite reach. I wouldn't use the pins on the ceiling for anything with any mass but it works for light foam. I put up triangular foam around most of the the room where the walls meet the ceiling. It hasn't moved in a couple of years.
I made a cloud using very thin plywood glued to a 4' x 8' frame made of 1" x 3" poplar. I cut away about 70% of the plywood and glued acoustic foam over the entire surface. I hung it about an inch below the ceiling so it had ventilation all around. That has worked out well.
