While it does seem counterintuitive to position anything between the tip of a cone/spike and a surface that a rack or stand is placed upon, a coupling disc can actually provide better sonics if it is designed well. The whole point (no pun untended) of a cone/spike tip is to use the load to stabilize a device upon extremely concentrated areas of a surface, and to effectively create a "virtual fulcrum point" that extends below the actual surface on which the tips are placed upon. This is the aspect that provides optimized coupling rather than an ineffective flat post or rod that simply rests on top of a hard surface, which is a very poor coupling action for audio purposes, and some hard surfaces do not transfer energy very well, so the coupling action can also be inferior as a result. Using a coupling disc can provide a very hard surface for the tip to rest upon, while the structure of the coupling disc can be optimized to transfer energy onto a less than optimum surface.
Herbie's Audio Lab offers many different options to consider, including slippery gliders, and coupling discs with various levels of vibration absorption and soundwave energy blockage, so I suggest asking Steve about what coupling disc product he would recommend for your particular application.
