As with all things concerning audio, YES, indeed there is a "best sounding" regulator. I could not tell you which regulator that is, however, I can say that the cheap regulators normally used are far from ideal. Very far.
I have used the TPS7A4700 with great results. (see link)
If you are considering better regs, the choice of diodes is also very important. I use IXYS HyperDYN in everything. They are amazing, without a doubt... (also expensive)
