Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ.

I have them.....

I have the XLO disc, the Ayre disc, the Purist Audio disc (that Uncle Stu Ono swore by), and a shit load of others. I never use ANY of them. Why?

Because in my system, the use of classical big orchestral tracks with wide dynamic range and every instrument imaginable (as in a Mahler symphony) seems to eliminate the very tiny bit of edge and harshness that can creep in from such 'break-in' discs mentioned above, when such discs are used for extended periods.

Uncle Stu himself many times cautioned about this effect, saying to be careful how long you left the discs in to play, as the Purist disc can really make the system bright and fatiguing at first (it will fade with time, however; nothing permanent, just a short-term PITA.) I found this to be true.

Also, conversations with Pierre Sprey at Mapleshade reinforced this view as well, as Pierre is adamant about NOT using any such break-in devices on his products, saying to instead use music with the most diverse instruments possible as your source for break-in. My own personal experiences (sadly) do seem to be consistent with both Pierre and Stu's findings, but YMMV and all that.

Again, all systems are different, of course, and one man's drink is another man's poison. I am sure all those who chimed in with positive results from these break-in discs are hearing exactly what they report. My findings serve only to provide another perspective for consideration.

If you can get a few to try out, please do so and share your findings. It is always good to get as many viewpoints as possible to consider, but ultimately, what works in your system is for you alone to determine.

Good luck and keep us posted, T456. :-)
