In the summer of 1990, I paid my first visit to Audio Directions Ltd., then located on the garage floor of a building on Waialae, not far from the Palolo McDonald's. You have to understand that, in those days, audio store staff were snooty, and would only cater to people who looked rich.So here I was, 18 years old, just having finished my freshman year of college. Yet, Stu took the time to demo Simply Physics Tonecones. Stu understood that, of course a penniless college kid wasn't going to buy a $2500 amp. But if you take care of him now, in due time, he will eventually be in the market for $2500 amps.
Stu played two LPs, Skid Row's debut album and Judas Priest's Screaming For Vengeance. I *think* the system comprised a VPI turntable, CJ electronics, and Vandersteen speakers. But that's beside the point. Stu was one of the rare personnel who did not outright dismiss us poor folk.
I actually did buy from him AQ Little Feet and a Sorbothane sheet, both of which worked wonders under Discmen. In future summers, I'd return to Honolulu, and make a point to see Stu at ADL. He tried to give his honest take, and never pressured customers.
For me, if it were not for Stu, who knows how long it would have taken, to get out of mass market electronics, and into high-performance audio? I still can't believe that that summer of 1990 was 25 years ago. To this day, I recall it as clearly as I did back then. With Stu's AQ Sorbothane under my D-10 Discman, I played Vio-lence's Oppressing The Masses and Forbidden's Twisted Into Form.
I've always wished Stu the best, and continue to pray for him.
