Brass has a lot of properties that are not present in other materials -
Additionally there are many "flavors" of brass and many different Tempers, or hardness:
Cast Brasses: Red Brass, SAE #40; Yellow Brass, SAE #41; Cast Brass-to be brazed, SAE #44
Wrought Brass: Commercial Brass Sheet, SAE #70 - which comes in grades A-C, and temper: Quarter Hard, Half Hard, 3/4 Hard, Hard, Extra Hard, Spring, Extra Spring.
Wrought Rod: SAE #72, Naval Brass (Tobin Bronze) SAE #73, and SAE #88
Some of the Aluminum alloys would be closer, but they will bear similar costs as the alloying materials are the same, or the different ones are even more expensive.
Bronze would be more similar, but this will not get price relief - same alloying agents...
Good Luck, and
